Spring garden clearance checklist — before the gardener arrives

10 April 2026 4 min read

If you're tackling the garden after winter, the cheapest way to do it is clear the waste first, then bring in the gardener. They'll charge a lot less if they're not also dragging branches to a skip.

  1. Start with the big structural stuff first: dead fence panels, rotten shed, broken decking.
  2. Cut hedges, shrubs, and overgrown climbers next — branches go on the same pile.
  3. Lift turf and weeds last, so you're not treading mud back through cleared areas.
  4. Sort waste into 3 piles: green (compostable), timber (chippable), and general (fence posts with concrete in them, etc.).
  5. Bag anything light that will blow away.
  6. Put rubble in rubble bags, double-lined.
  7. Sweep the patio last.
  8. Book the removal the day before the gardener arrives.

Follow this order and your bill for labour and disposal will be smaller than if we'd had to do the cutting too. We run these as garden waste removal in Richmond and Twickenham, and larger post-winter clears in Wimbledon where a shed and fence panels go in the same load.
